By Helen Mawson

Are you suffering with hay fever or allergies? If so the Bowen Technique could help you

Many people suffer from problems caused by allergies or intolerance, for some these problems can be life threatening, for most people however symptoms are miserable and tiresome. Help is at hand however so read on for some suggestions that may help minimise your symptoms and suffering.

Bowen procedures;
In Bowen we have some excellent procedures that can address many problems associated with the type of allergy or intolerance that you may be suffering with. Some of these for example may be effecting your digestive system so we could work with that area alternatively the problem may be effecting you respiratory system so we would use the procedures that allow us to address this area. For people suffering with miserable Hay fever symptoms we have a wonderful technique called the TMJ, which can have a significant impact upon all of the body systems. I will talk more about that later. The work we do in Bowen can help the body systems build resistance and tolerance in general helping the body to become more robust.

Allergic reactions occur when a person is exposed to or ingests a substance or food that the body does not recognise. An immune response is triggered which is the reaction people experience as an allergy. With a true allergy the person responds to any amount of the substance.

Intolerance on the other hand occurs when an individual is exposed to a certain amount of the offending substance or food, too much for their body to handle which tips the balance. Stress levels effect intolerance greatly, if a person is very busy and under pressure their tolerance levels will be low, on the other hand tolerance will be high when a person is relaxed and balanced. You may have experienced this on holidays you eat things that would normally cause a problem for you but because you are relaxed and stress free no problem occurs.

Typical allergy/ intolerance symptoms include;
runny nose, streaming eyes, itching, sneezing, & rashes. Hidden allergies could also be causing problems for you and could be the root cause of other health issues such as; arthritis, PMS, IBS, digestive disturbances, weight loss / gain, eczema, asthma, migraine, fibroids to name but a few.

Causes of allergies / intolerance include;
foods such as wheat & dairy. A good indication of allergy or intolerance is when you constantly crave certain foods. Grass and tree pollen are common allergens and cause hay fever which is miserable for lots of people during the summer months. Chemicals around the home or workplace could also be causing problems as could airborne substances such as moulds. Other allergens may be more complex.

Help yourself and book a treatment;
A technique I use a lot when treating clients with hay fever and allergies is called the TMJ short for temporomandibular joint! The technique helps to balance the jaw and its alignment with the skull. Often disruption in this joint results after dentistry, damage to other areas of the spine, compensation, stress and tension and a multitude of other reasons. When the TMJ is out of balance all sorts of problems can result such as hay fever, allergies, eye problems, ear problems, headaches, migraines, sinus problems, congestion, asthma, dizziness and the list goes on. In order to specifically address hay fever I suggest that individuals have some treatment a couple of months before their hay fever season begins.

Look at your nutrition;
sometimes when our body is not achieving the correct amounts of certain vitamins and minerals allergy symptoms may occur.

Supplement your diet;
certain supplements are proven to reduce allergic symptoms, Quercetin which is a plant flavonoid is one of these it’s been known to reduce allergic reactions especially hayfever & asthma. Vitamin C is a great supplement also as it helps the immune system. Other supplements would include natural anti-inflammatories such as essential fatty acids, and curcumin.

Eat more organic;
organic foods that are free from chemicals tend to be easier to eat for those people suffering with allergies

Wash fruit & veg;
even organic produce should be washed thoroughly before use. Chemical residue and moulds on fruit and vegetables builds in between them been picked and packed and cause problems for some people.

Avoid processed foods;
such as wheat & dairy products substitute with organic whole foods such as rye and spelt products.

Use eco-friendly skin & household products;
these are much kinder to your skin and your body systems, clothes, household & environment.

Note when symptoms occur;
for example when your stressed? When you have eaten a little or a lot of food?
